Projection 2022–2062 · vital statistics 2025

The population the Maldives
is about to become.

Two official series looking in opposite directions: the forty-year projection published by the Bureau of Statistics, and the register of births and deaths that records what is happening right now.

01 — Forty years ahead

678,024 people in 2062

The revised projection runs from 2022 to 2062 on assumptions the Bureau publishes alongside it: fertility falling from 1.7 to 1.5, life expectancy reaching 85.3 years for women and 82.8 for men, and a foreign population that keeps growing for another decade.

Resident population by nationality

Mid-year resident population. The Maldivian series turns down after 2050 while the foreign series keeps climbing — all of the country's net growth after that point is migration.

Foreign residents as a share of the population

Thirty per cent in 2022, thirty-nine by 2062. The projection assumes foreign residents grow for another ten years and then follow the trajectory of labour-receiving countries in the Middle East.

02 — The age structure

2047: more elderly than children

The 65+ population rises from 20,792 to 119,710 — nearly six times over — while the number of children falls by almost half. These are resident totals, Maldivian and foreign together.

03 — Births and deaths

5,625 births, 1,399 deaths in 2025

The Vital Statistics Bulletin records every registered birth and death. In 2025 the country added 4,226 people by natural increase — before any migration is counted.

Live births by quarter and sex

Registered live births. Births are remarkably flat across the year — the quarterly range is under 6%.

Births by age of mother

Nearly six in ten births are to mothers aged 25–34. Births to mothers under 20 number 65 in the whole year.

Deaths by age group and sex

Deaths occurring in the Maldives. Roughly three in five are of residents aged 65 and over, and men outnumber women in every band.

04 — Where they will live

13 atolls smaller in 2062 than today

Projected change in resident population between 2022 and 2062, by atoll. 7 are projected to grow and 13 to shrink — internal migration is assumed to continue at its current pace, which means it keeps pulling toward the centre.

Projected change in resident population, 2022 → 2062

Percentage change over the full projection horizon. Kaafu contains the Malé area, which absorbs effectively all of the country's net growth.
