Census 2022 · 186 inhabited islands · Maldives Bureau of Statistics

One country,
186 inhabited islands.

National statistics average away the thing that defines the Maldives: it is not one place but nearly two hundred, most of them small, each with its own population, age profile and labour market. The census publishes all of them separately, and this is that data island by island.

Administrative islands in the atolls; excludes Male' City, resorts and industrial islands. Growth is the annual rate of change in the Maldivian resident population between the 2014 and 2022 censuses. NEET is the share of 15–24 year olds not in employment, education or training.

02 — Which islands are emptying

62 of 186 islands are losing people

Between the 2014 and 2022 censuses the Maldivian population fell on 62 islands — 33% of them — and rose on 120. The islands that are shrinking are home to 63,707 people between them, which is where the migration to Malé shows up at ground level.

The steepest declines and rises

Annual rate of change in the Maldivian resident population between the two censuses. A rate rather than a headcount, so a small island losing thirty people ranks alongside a large one losing hundreds.

Island size against population change

Every inhabited island: how many people live there, and whether that number is rising or falling. The smallest islands scatter widest — on an island of two hundred, a single family leaving is a percentage point — but the weight of the distribution sits below the zero line at every size.

03 — Where there is no work

On Dhuvaafaru, 47% of young people are neither working nor studying

The census measures the labour force island by island. Unemployment averages 4.3% across the atoll islands — but that average hides a range from under 1% to 14%. The NEET rate, which counts 15–24 year olds neither in work nor in education or training, is the harsher measure and runs at 23%.

Islands where women’s unemployment is higher

than men’s on the same island

The eighteen islands with the highest unemployment

Unemployment rate among resident population, census 2022. The gold line is the population-weighted average across all 186 islands — most islands sit below it, and a minority carry rates several times higher.

Where the gap between women and men is widest

Unemployment for women and for men on the same island. Women are worse off on 129 of the 186 islands where both are reported, and on the islands shown here the difference runs to double digits — a gap that a national average of a few percent completely conceals.

A note on reading these rates. On an island of three hundred people the labour force might be a hundred and fifty, so one person finding or losing work moves the rate by most of a percentage point — the smallest islands will always look the most volatile, and a single high figure there is not the same kind of evidence as a high figure on an island of three thousand. The population of each island is in the tooltip and the table for exactly that reason. All figures are the resident population as counted on census night, September 2022.
